BIOGRAPHY
Bartosz Thiede is an award-winning Polish-Irish composer and sound designer based in Oxford, writing original music for theatre, choirs, film and the concert hall. His musical language is strongly shaped by his Polish and Irish heritage, drawing on folk traditions, linguistic inflections, unusual modes and contemporary theatrical sound worlds. His choral music has been performed by ensembles across the UK and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Berkshire and RTÉ, the Irish state broadcaster. He is the composer and writer of the original musical Have You Met Stan?, which received the 2025 Brighton Fringe Musical Theatre Bursary before performances at Brighton Fringe and London’s King’s Head Theatre. The score combines Polish and Irish folk influences with contemporary pop, and the production was praised by BroadwayWorld as “quietly powerful” and “musically accomplished.” His theatre work also includes music, arranging and sound design for Oxford Playhouse’s History of (Almost) Everything, the musical comedy Life in Boxes, and additional arrangements, incidental music and underscoring for Oxford Playhouse pantomimes including Jack and the Beanstalk and Sleeping Beauty. He is currently composing a new commission for children’s theatre. Bartosz’s choral works include Adoro te devote, Lux, Missa Lundsberg, Róisín Dubh and Mass in Time of Pestilence, with his music sung by choirs around the country. He was a finalist in the Japan International Choral Composition Competition. His concert and chamber catalogue also includes Immigrant Songs for tenor and piano, Dust for voice and electronics, Songs of Yesterday for strings and his Sonata for Piano. His work for screen and audio includes the short film Checking In, Checking Out, for which he is credited as composer, alongside original music for PodTime Stories and The Queen(er) Ears. Across theatre, concert music and sound design, his work is driven by storytelling, creating musical worlds in which folk memory, contemporary sound and dramatic structure intersect.
